๐Ÿ“š Quick Reference โ€” Regular Verbs (-d / -ed / -ied)

For most verbs, add -ed in the Past Simple. Some verbs follow a special rule:

1. Most verbs โ†’ add -ed
cook โ†’ cooked ยท play โ†’ played ยท listen โ†’ listened
2. Verbs ending in -e โ†’ add only -d
dance โ†’ danced ยท live โ†’ lived
3. Consonant + -y โ†’ change y โ†’ i + -ed
cry โ†’ cried ยท try โ†’ tried ยท study โ†’ studied
4. CVC sandwich (consonant-vowel-consonant) โ†’ double the last consonant + -ed
shop โ†’ shopped ยท chat โ†’ chatted ยท stop โ†’ stopped

Ex 3 Past Simple โ€” Add d / ed / ied (Regular Verbs)

Complete the sentences. Use the correct form of the verbs in brackets. Add -d / -ed / -ied according to the spelling rules.

๐Ÿ“š Quick Reference โ€” Negative, Question & Yes / No (Regular Verbs)

  • Negative: subject + didn't + base verb.
    She didn’t play tennis yesterday.  (NOT “didn’t played”)
  • Question: Did + subject + base verb?
    Did she play tennis yesterday?
  • Short answers: Yes, [pronoun] did. / No, [pronoun] didn't.

Ex 4 Past Simple โ€” Negative, Question, Yes / No Answers

Change each sentence into the negative form (โ€“) and the question form (?). Then write a yes-answer (โœ“) and a no-answer (โœ—). Use the words in brackets.

  • Negative: subject + wasn't / weren't.

  • Question: Was / Were + subject + โ€ฆ?
