What does “have” mean?

The verb “have” means to own or to possess something. We use have and has to talk about things that belong to someone.

When do we use HAVE and HAS?

Negative Form

To make a negative sentence:

  • I/You/We/They → do not have (don’t have)
  • He/She/It → does not have (doesn’t have)

I don’t have a pencil.

She doesn’t have a phone.

They don’t have time.

Questions

To ask a question:

Do + I/you/we/they + have … ?

Does + he/she/it + have … ?

Do you have homework?

Does he have a sister?

Does the dog have a name?

Short answers:

Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.

Yes, he does. / No, she doesn’t.


Reading – A Day at Daniel’s House

Daniel is a student in Grade 6. He has a big family. He has two sisters and one brother. His brother has a guitar and plays every evening.

Daniel and his sisters have many books in their room. They have a small desk where they do their homework.

Daniel’s mother has a job in a hospital. She has long working hours, but she always has time to help her children.

Daniel’s father doesn’t have much free time during the week, but on Saturdays he has breakfast with the whole family.

Their house has a beautiful garden. It has many flowers and a small tree.

Daniel says,
“We don’t have everything in the world, but we have love in our family.”
