The comparative form lets you say that one thing has more of a quality than another. The basic pattern is:
X is [comparative form] than Y
The 4 Rules

| 1. Short adjectives (1 syllable) | add -er | tall → taller · cold → colder · fast → faster · old → older |
| 1a. Short adj. ending in C-V-C | double the last consonant + -er | big → bigger · hot → hotter · thin → thinner |
| 1b. Short adj. ending in -e | add only -r | large → larger · cute → cuter · safe → safer |
| 2. Adjectives ending in -y | change y → i + -er | happy → happier · easy → easier · funny → funnier |
| 3. Long adjectives (2+ syllables) | use more before the adjective | expensive → more expensive · interesting → more interesting · popular → more popular |
| 4. Irregular forms | memorize them! | good → better · bad → worse · far → farther |
💡 Don’t forget! The comparative form is always followed by “than”:
