๐Ÿ“š Reference โ€” How to form the Comparative

The comparative form lets you say that one thing has more of a quality than another. The basic pattern is:

X is [comparative form] than Y

The 4 Rules

Rule How Examples
1. Short adjectives (1 syllable) add -er tall โ†’ taller ยท cold โ†’ colder ยท fast โ†’ faster ยท old โ†’ older
1a. Short adj. ending in C-V-C double the last consonant + -er big โ†’ bigger ยท hot โ†’ hotter ยท thin โ†’ thinner
1b. Short adj. ending in -e add only -r large โ†’ larger ยท cute โ†’ cuter ยท safe โ†’ safer
2. Adjectives ending in -y change y โ†’ i + -er happy โ†’ happier ยท easy โ†’ easier ยท funny โ†’ funnier
3. Long adjectives (2+ syllables) use more before the adjective expensive โ†’ more expensive ยท interesting โ†’ more interesting ยท popular โ†’ more popular
4. Irregular forms memorize them! good โ†’ better ยท bad โ†’ worse ยท far โ†’ farther
